Data Protection in the Age of Big Data

In the age when “personal data is an asset”, many enterprises and organisations use big data to maximise business gains and upgrade their services. At the same time, the public’s awareness of protection of personal data privacy has been increasing. How to facilitate business operations and find new business frontiers on the one hand and ensure the protection of personal data privacy of the public on the other has become an important task for enterprises and organisations.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (PCPD), will organise a webinar on “Data Protection in the Age of Big Data”, which is presented as a PCPD 25th Anniversary event, and is delighted to have a representative of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) as the guest speaker. Details of the webinar are as follows:

Security measures taken by the PCPD for webinar:

  1. The personal data collected in connection with the enrolment in sharing session will be used for arranging the sharing session. The PCPD will take security measures for storage. The PCPD will not disclose the personal data collected to other parties.
  2. Login information provided by participants is used for statistical purposes and carrying out the above-mentioned sharing session only by the PCPD.
  3. No participants shall publish the content of the sharing session in any format (including but not limited to recording audios and videos) without prior written consent from the PCPD.

Importance notes for participants on data security:

  1. Please log in with your Reference Number. Avoid using misleading name or online nickname so that the host can identify users easily.
  2. Do not share or publish the meeting ID, meeting links and password sent by the organiser arbitrarily.
  3. Ensure that the network connections are safe and secure (e.g. do not use public Wi-Fi, and use strong encryption for Wi-Fi network). Ensure that all devices are installed with the latest security patches and anti-virus software, and properly protected by firewalls.
  4. Participants are recommended to stop screen sharing, mute the microphone and turn off the webcam after logging in.
  5. Do not click any suspicious links during the webinar.
  6. Do not share confidential information during the webinar.
  7. Participants should be aware of any suspicious account activity. Sign out all Zoom account when in doubt.
