The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) held the “Privacy-Friendly Awards 2023” (Awards) Presentation Ceremony last Thursday (31 August) to recognise the commitment and performance in protecting personal data privacy of 138 organisations, including public and private organisations as well as government departments.

The Awards Presentation Ceremony, which was officiated by the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs, Mr Erick TSANG Kwok-wai, GBS, IDSM, JP, was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Other guests included members of the Personal Data (Privacy) Advisory Committee and the Standing Committee on Technological Developments of the PCPD, Mr Addy WONG Wai-hung, MH, JP, Mr Joseph LIN Ho-man, MH, Ms Eirene YEUNG, Professor Jason LAU and Professor the Hon K F WONG, MH.

The PCPD organised the Awards under the theme of “Embrace Privacy Management Programme to Gain Trust and Benefits”. After careful consideration and assessment by the judging panel, 138 organisations were awarded, among which 8 organisations won the Outstanding Gold Awards; 80 organisations won the Gold Awards; 33 organisations won the Silver Awards and 17organisations won the Bronze Awards.

In his opening speech, Mr TSANG remarked, “I have noticed that this year’s Awards received an overwhelming response. It is highly encouraging to witness an increasing number of organisations joining the ‘privacy-friendly community’, demonstrating their commitment to respecting and safeguarding personal data privacy. Our country’s ‘14th Five-Year Plan’ has given Hong Kong a new position and mission which includes developing Hong Kong as an international innovation and technology hub. Therefore data is vital to the future development of Hong Kong. It is indeed imperative for organisations to implement good data governance.”

In her welcome address, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (Privacy Commissioner), Ms Ada CHUNG Lai-ling, said, “The number of award-winning organisations this year is nearly 40% higher than that of the previous awards, which reflects that more and more organisations recognise the importance of protecting personal data privacy. I am also very pleased to see that all award-winning organisations support the implementation of a Personal Data Privacy Management Programme. Indeed, good data governance is a prerequisite for Hong Kong to become an international innovation and technology hub and a world-class smart city. I hope that the award-winning organisations can be role models in their respective sectors and work with my office to promote good data governance, and this is beneficial to members of the public and the society as a whole.”

Among the 138 award-winning organisations, eight organisations with exemplary performance were selected as Outstanding Gold awardees. They are (in alphabetical order) Census and Statistics Department, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, Gleneagles Hospital Hong Kong, ISS Facility Services Limited, KPMG China, Swire Coca-Cola Limited, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited and Union Hospital. Short videos were produced for the Outstanding Gold awardees to share their experience and insights in the protection of personal data privacy. Privacy Commissioner’s Office Launches “Privacy-Friendly Awards 2023”

In view of the positive feedbacks and overwhelming response received for the inaugural “Privacy-Friendly Awards 2021”, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) is pleased to announce the launch of the 2nd “Privacy-Friendly Awards 2023” (Awards) and invites applications from interested organisations starting today (5 January). Under the theme of “Embrace Privacy Management Programme to Gain Trust and Benefits”, the Awards aim to recognise the commitment and efforts of enterprises, public and private organisations as well as government departments in protecting personal data privacy.

The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Ms Ada CHUNG Lai-ling, said, “In the era of big data, the best way for organisations to properly handle vast amount of personal data is to establish a comprehensive Personal Data Privacy Management Programme (PMP) and appoint a Data Protection Officer. This is like protecting the data collected under lock. A PMP highlights an organisation’s commitment to good data governance, which will help increase the confidence and trust of its stakeholders, as well as enhance the organisation’s reputation. We organise the Awards under the theme of “Embrace Privacy Management Programme to Gain Trust and Benefits” this year to encourage more organisations to champion the importance of setting up a PMP.

Participating organisations with designated “Privacy Protection Measures” in place will be awarded. In addition to the Gold, Silver or Bronze “Privacy-Friendly” Certificate, the awardees will be presented with one-year free membership of the PCPD Data Protection Officers’ Club and specified quota of enrolment of the professional workshops organised by the PCPD. Outstanding performers will also be invited to participate in the publicity activities to showcase their achievements in personal data privacy protection.

Interested organisations should complete and submit the online application form and relevant supporting documents on the Awards website www.pcpd.org.hk/privacyfriendlyawards.html by 10 March 2023. The results of the Awards and the arrangement of the Awards ceremony will be announced later.
