Privacy Commissioner Mr Stephen Wong was invited to attend the Luohan Academy Conference on Privacy Protection and Data Governance, that brought together the world’s leading experts on privacy and data governance in Hangzhou, China from 19 to 20 March 2019. He delivered presentations and participated in discussions on data privacy protection policies in the Conference.
In the Conference, the Privacy Commissioner delivered two presentations titled “Hong Kong's Unique and Irreplaceable Attributes – Free Flow of Information and Personal Data Privacy Protection” and "Cross Border / Boundary Data Transfer in Hong Kong". He mentioned that Hong Kong has begun the protection of personal data in 1995, but it did not fully follow the International or the EU privacy law so as to balance business development and human rights protection. The Privacy Commissioner indicated that in addition to law enforcement, PCPD wished to provide ethical standards for areas not covered by the Law, and hence launched the Privacy Management Project in 2014 to promote personal data management to interested parties and issued specific guidance for some industries.
