“Don’t Hand Over Your Personal Data – Beware of Fraudsters” –
Privacy Commissioner’s Office Volunteer Team
Organises a Christmas Talk for the Elderly

The Volunteer Team of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) visited over 80 elders at St. James’ Settlement Wanchai District Elderly Community Centre on 27 December. In addition to conveying their good wishes with love and joy, the Volunteer Team arranged a talk and some interactive games to raise the elderly’s awareness of the prevention of fraud, highlighting the different kinds of scams in recent times.

As part of the PCPD’s anti-fraud promotional campaign this year under the theme of “Don’t Hand Over Your Personal Data – Beware of Fraudsters”, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (Privacy Commissioner), Ms Ada CHUNG Lai-ling, shared the latest anti-fraud information with the elderly during the visit. She said, “Swindlers employ a myriad of defrauding tricks. Recently, there have been fake travel agency webpages, phishing SMS messages about the expiry of ‘Octopus’ reward points, phone scams impersonating hospital staff, and even fraudulent videos or photos created by AI ‘Deepfake’ technology. Elders can easily fall prey to scams if they are not vigilant. I hope that today’s talk can provide the elderly with eight tips for protecting themselves and fending off swindlers.”

Artiste Ms Kitty YUEN (阮小儀) was invited to play host to the event, with anti-fraud messages integrating into the quizzes and role-playing games to increase the participants’ involvement and raise their awareness of the prevention of fraud.

A number of lucky winners received prizes at the lucky draw session during the event, and the Volunteer Team also distributed Christmas gift bags to every participant. The event ended successfully in a joyous festive atmosphere.
