Privacy Commissioner Responds to the Incident of a Police Officer Checking a Reporter's Identity Card on Queensway


In response to the incident of a police officer reportedly displaying the Hong Kong Identity Card of a reporter in front of the camera while checking the reporter's identity on Queensway this afternoon, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (Privacy Commissioner), Mr Stephen Kai-yi WONG made the following response:

  • The office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) noted the video and media reports of the incident, and has received enquiries from the media and individuals. The PCPD is in the process of an investigation on the “Tai Po Mega Mall” incident, and will follow up on this afternoon's incident with the Police.
  • The PCPD will, as always, follow up and enforce the law in every case in accordance with the powers conferred by the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO) in a fair and impartial manner, without fear or favour.
  • Any person, who believes that his personal data privacy has been infringed upon and can provide prima facie evidence, may complain to the PCPD. Upon receipt of the complaint, the PCPD will follow up the case according to its Complaints Handling Policy.
