PCPD Stages the “Stay Smart. Mind Your Digital Footprint” Public Education Roadshow

(21 December 2015) The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (“PCPD”) will stage a two-week Public Education Roadshow from 27 December 2015, with an exhibition vehicle shuttling among various districts in Hong Kong to enhance public awareness on personal data privacy protection. The theme is “Stay Smart. Mind Your Digital Footprint”. It aims to remind the public of the importance of protecting their own personal data and respecting others’ personal data in this digital era.

As one of the PCPD’s annual community activities, the Roadshow is held in conjunction with the newly launched TV Announcements in the Public Interest (“API”). Well-known media figure Ms Akina Fong, who was invited by the PCPD to take part in the TV API, was featured on the exhibition vehicle to disseminate the message about protecting personal data online. Display panels inside the exhibition truck provide practical tips for protecting personal data in daily life such as using smartphones and social networks, and for protecting children’s online privacy. Relevant educational leaflets could also be collected.

The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Mr Stephen Wong said, “We may spend only a few seconds in ticking the box [I agree] or [I accept] to have our own personal data handed over to a service provider online, often without reading or understanding what we have agreed or accepted. These digital footprints may never be deleted. The more important issue is that we may not know what happens to our own personal data having been handed over. We need to be vigilant and stay smart when we go online! ”

The Roadshow will last till 9 January 2016. Interested parties are invited to visit the PCPD’s webpage: www.pcpd.org.hk/roadshow to learn more about the schedule.

The newly launched TV API entitled “Stay Start. Mind Your Digital Footprint” can be viewed at the PCPD’s website (www.pcpd.org.hk) and YouTube page (www.youtube.com/user/PCPDHKSAR).
