Response to media enquiry on disclosing personal data on the internet

“I'd like to get the privacy commissioner's response to former chief executive CY Leung posting the names and ages, as well as alleged charges of teaching staff who were said to have been arrested and made court appearance.

We have the following questions:
- is the move potentially in violation of privacy laws?
- whether the privacy commissioner has any concerns over the move?
- does it make a difference if the information was really gathered from public information and media reports as described?”

Answer:
  • As of this morning (14 October), the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) received a total of 17 complaints relating to the matter.

  • The PCPD will handle the complaints in accordance with the established procedures and has nothing to add at this stage.
