Responses to Media Enquiry on The Centralised Database Established by The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers

Thank you for your follow-up enquiry and our office’s responses are as follows:

·     Representatives of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) have approached the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) and explained the background for establishing a centralised insurance claims database in Hong Kong, their work progress as well as the preliminary proposals. The PCPD has provided comments to HKFI having regard to the relevant provisions of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (the Ordinance).  The HKFI will come up with a revised proposal.  The PCPD will keep in view of the development of the proposed database and ensure its implementation shall comply with the requirements under the Ordinance.

·     As regulator, it is crucial for the PCPD to keep stakeholders of different industries well informed of regulatory requirements under the Ordinance, and understand their concerns on various topics of personal data privacy. The PCPD will continue to engage different industry associations and other stakeholders with a view to assisting them in protecting individuals’ personal data with the requirements under the Ordinance and developing a culture of respecting others’ personal data.
