The Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) is an annual event jointly supported by members of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) to raise the awareness of the protection of personal data privacy by members of the public. This year, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (PCPD) is organising the PAW 2024 from 10 to 16 May under the theme of “Safeguard Data Security • Safeguard Privacy!”. A series of activities will be held during the PAW 2024:
With a view to raising public awareness of safeguarding data security, an exhibition truck of the PCPD, namely the “Privacy Protection Truck” will tour around the city during the period from 14 to 26 May 2024. In addition to playing educational videos and distributing relevant publications, interactive games will also be set up in the truck to increase visitors’ understanding of protecting personal data privacy and data security in a lively and interesting way.

To help corporations and members of the public identify online traps and avoid scams, the PCPD fully supports the “Together, We Create a Safe Cyberworld” Webinar co-organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Coordination Centre. Representative from the PCPD will give a presentation on responding to cybersecurity threats and data breaches, share insights on hidden threats in the cyberworld and also the cybersecurity measures to be adopted.

Given that human error or cyberattacks on the information system of organisations occur from time to time, resulting in the leakage of personal data, the PCPD organises this seminar. The Privacy Commissioner, Ms Ada CHUNG Lai-ling, and Mr Brad Kwok, Chief Personal Data Officer of the PCPD will talk about the lessons learnt from data breach cases which occurred in recent years, and elaborate on the causes of the data breaches and the remedial measures taken. The speakers will also provide their recommendations on how to enhance cybersecurity and data security measures, as well as highlight the key points in preventing and handling data breach incidents.

To enhance organisations’ capability in safeguarding data security, the PCPD has launched the “Data Security Trio”, including the “Data Security” thematic webpage, the “Data Security Scanner” assessment webpage, as well as the Data Security Hotline 2110 1155. Relevant promotional posters will be distributed to PCPD’s Data Protection Officers’ Club members, government departments, chambers of commerce, District Offices, community centres, non-profit making organisations and schools. The PCPD will also promote the importance of data security through a wide range of channels, including at major public transportation terminals, on social media, online platforms, newspaper, etc., with a view to raising public awareness of data security and the protection of personal data privacy.
