Privacy Commissioner Organises Online Workshop
“Privacy Awareness Week 2020: From Principles to Practice – Personal Data Protection for Enterprises”
Updating Businesses on Developments of Global Privacy Regulations Practicing Compliance and Data Ethics

The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (PCPD) Mr Stephen Kai-yi WONG today hosted online workshop “From Principles to Practice – Personal Data Protection for Enterprises”, which was attended by more than 850 participants comprising privacy management professionals, members of the Data Protection Officers’ Club, employers, executives, human resources practitioners, etc. Through video conferencing and live streaming on social media platforms, the PCPD explained how to conduct Privacy Impact Assessment and implement Privacy by Design, and the essence of data ethics and its practice; and provided updates on the two-year enforcement of the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union and the latest privacy-related regulations in the mainland. The PCPD also discussed privacy issues relating to COVID-19, including protection of privacy when using video conferencing apps, safeguards for employees’ personal data under the pandemic, etc.

The PCPD said, “Enterprises often collect and handle various kinds of personal data of customers and employees in their business operations. In the past few years, there have been legislative reforms around the world.  In this age when ‘personal data is an asset’, there are ever-increasing expectations among customers and members of the public with regard to protection of their personal data. In order to win customers’ trust and enhance corporate reputation and competitive advantage, enterprises must diligently safeguard personal data privacy, practise ethical data governance and comply with the requirements of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance.”

The PCPD also introduced the newly published, comprehensive publication “From Principles to Practice – SME Personal Data Protection Toolkit”. The PCPD said, “It is a challenge for SMEs, with their limited resources, to attach sufficient importance to protection of personal data. Therefore, I hope this toolkit can enhance their knowledge in protecting and respecting personal data, and provide a structured tool for assisting them in carrying out compliance and governance work, so as to create a workplace and an operating model that uphold the culture of respecting and protecting personal data privacy, under the overall direction of developing Hong Kong into a Smart City.”

The workshop is one of the highlights of the Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) 2020.  The PAW is organsised annually by member data protection authorities (including this office) of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA). The theme of the Hong Kong PAW 2020 is “Protecting Privacy   Respecting Dignity for a Smart Hong Kong”. Through a wide range of programmes, this office reaches out to different sectors and strata of the community to raise awareness of protecting and respecting privacy. This office has created e-posters for members of the public to download.

“From Principles to Practice – SME Personal Data Protection Toolkit” can be downloaded from the PCPD website. Printed copies of the toolkit can be obtained by emailing this office (training@pcpd.org.hk). Copies are available while stock lasts.
