“Share Personal Data with Care” - PCPD Joins Hands with Members of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities to Host the “Privacy Awareness Week 2017”
(8 May 2017) The Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, Hong Kong (“PCPD”) together with members of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (“APPA”) launches the “Privacy Awareness Week 2017” (“PAW 2017”) from 8 to 14 May.
The theme of PAW 2017 in Hong Kong is
“Share Personal Data with Care”. The campaign is supported by 132 partner secondary schools and over 400 members of the Data Protection Officers' Club (“DPOC”). Various promotion and public education activities are organised during the week to spread the message at schools and to the wider community.
Privacy Commissioner Mr Stephen Kai-yi WONG said, “With the widespread use of smart devices and the application of Internet of Things technologies, people are getting used to provide their personal information via different channels and platforms in their daily lives. This year’s theme reminds members of the public that they should always be vigilant and think twice before sharing their own and others’ personal data, and the best way to safeguard our own privacy is to get control of personal data back in our hands. We hope that the culture of “Protect, Respect Personal Data” would be cultivated among different sectors of the community.”
The PCPD has specially designed four new posters this year. In these posters, tips for protecting personal data online are introduced by Ah Po, a motion graphic character in the PCPD's new series of educational videos “Think Privacy! Be Smart Online”. The posters are available at the PCPD website for download for free. The educational videos are also broadcast at the community halls and centres under the management of the Home Affairs Department. In addition, the PCPD will stage a public exhibition at the Admiralty MTR station from 12 to 14 May. Members of the public are welcome to attend the exhibition which conveys practical privacy protection tips on four aspects, including mobile apps, managing online accounts and passwords, webcams and social media.
To cater for the needs of different stakeholders, the PCPD also launches various themed activities during the week. Five educational talks in collaboration with Caritas Hong Kong, Pok Oi Hospital, Shamshuipo Kaifong Welfare Association and Sik Sik Yuen are held at their elderly centres to share tips with the elderly on how to protect their personal data in their daily life. For business enterprises and organisations, the PCPD specially arranges a lunch talk for the DPOC members to share with them the smart use of portable storage devices from data protection perspective and how a data breach should be handled.
On 13 May, the PCPD will host a grand finale for the PAW 2017 by holding the Award Presentation Ceremony of the Student Ambassador for Privacy Protection cum Recognition Scheme on Promoting Privacy Protection 2017 (“Recognition Scheme”). The award presentation for the Short Video Competition 2017 under the programme will also be held on the same occasion. The Recognition Scheme has received an overwhelming response since its inception last year, with the number of school partners mounting to 132 in 2017. The Recognition Scheme offers gold, silver and bronze awards to commend and acknowledge the achievements of secondary schools that demonstrate efforts in promoting personal data privacy protection on campuses.
APPA, formed in 1992, is the principal forum for privacy authorities in the Asia Pacific Region to form partnerships and exchange ideas about privacy regulation, new technologies and the management of privacy enquiries and complaints. There are currently 20 members. The PCPD is one of the members of APPA, and also a standing member of its Governance Committee. PAW is an annual international event jointly held by the members of the APPA, aiming to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting personal data privacy through a week of public education activities. This year, PAW will be joined by Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States and Macao.
