Privacy Commissioner’s Office Issues New Versions of Leaflet on “Legal Assistance for Civil Claims under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance”

An individual who suffers damage due to a contravention of a requirement under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO) by a data user may be entitled to compensation as provided under section 66 of the PDPO. Eligible persons may also apply for legal assistance from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) pursuant to section 66B of the PDPO in seeking compensation from the data user concerned.

The PCPD today issued a new version of the information leaflet entitled “Legal Assistance for Civil Claims under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance” to provide an overview of the legal assistance scheme to the public. The PCPD also encourages the use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms (including conciliation and mediation) in negotiating settlements out of court.
